On Motherhood, and Superheroes

My Mom is a superhero.

It occurred to me this earlier in the week, when I listened to my regular radio station.

Two of the morning guys were putting together costumes in a bid to apply to the World Superhero Organization. Dee decided his alter ego was Blackout, while Taint was (this still makes me snicker) Walken, Texas Ranger. That's Walken, not Walker. As in Christopher Walken, with a dead-on impression to match. Hilarious.

Anyway, it occurred to me that there is a superhero, perhaps, lurking in all of us, just waiting to be discovered.

Only the thing is, I couldn't really figure out what I'm so good at that I would qualify for super powers, dammit.

But my Mom, now, that's a different story.

My Mom is the most selfless person I know. She would do anything for anyone at the drop of a hat. I know this is true because I have put it to the test more than once, calling on her and my father when I was in the hospital and needed someone to watch the boys because The Engineer was across the country (or even out of it) on business. I have asked for the same favor while we were away celebrating a birthday or an anniversary, or just when I was falling apart from stress and couldn't handle it any more.

Every time, my Mom would come through for me, even if it meant driving across the state at the last minute to be here.

And she does the same thing for her own Mom and siblings.

My Mom is the oldest of six brothers and sisters (though I think she looks the youngest). Despite living on a fixed income herself, Mom and Dad chip in financially to make sure her own mother, my grandmother, is cared for now that she has reached her mid-nineties(!). Great-grandma, in fact, is a bit of a superhero herself. Here she is with a painting she made last month.

But back to Mom. She is, as I say, one of six kids, and she helped raise her younger brothers and sisters. Maybe that's why she can remember the names and birth dates of all of their kids, and their kids' spouses, and all of their children, too. I don't know how she does it, because I can't, and I'm mumble mumble years old.

But although I may forget my own niece and nephews' birthdays occasionally, or neglect to call my two wonderful brothers-in-law when they are celebrating, my Mom never lets anyone's special day pass without notice.

My Mom is also a very private person, though. She wouldn't want to go around having anyone treat her as Mother Teresa despite her caring and empathetic nature. So, even though I think she deserves it, I wouldn't make her superhero alter-ego be Super Selfless. That's much too showy for Mom.

Instead, I'd draw on her other talents to create that superhero persona.

First of all, Mom is fantastic with language. When I was growing up, Mom was always working on a novel that she never really finished. I think her unpublished status is due more to modesty than a lack of perseverance, because Mom never gave up on anything.

Her love of language makes her excel at word games, scramblets, crossword puzzles and the like. She loves Scrabble and can always find that seven-letter word hiding in the tiles. So that's a good place to start.

I also don't think Mom'd want some silly sidekick hanging around, dragging her down, when she was performing her heroics. Mom's the kind of person that likes to get things done. She's really organzied, and she does well on her own.

So, that's what we have to work with--a lone avenger who loves any kind of linguistic challenge.

So (prepare yourself for ingenious superhero name time!) I have decided that my Mom would make the perfect....

Crossword Crusader!

That's right. Imagine the scenario: you're stuck in the middle of a Scrabble game. You're down by fifty points and your tile rack holds an umpromising combination of U I R Y O X Q. You're about to concede defeat when...

In swoops the Crossword Crusader!

Dressed in comfortable loungewear (because she has far too much fashion sense to opt for skin-tight spandex), a pencil tucked handily behind her ear, a thesaurus in one pocket and a dictionary in another, she reaches down with lightning speed and rearranges your letters, playing them on a T for the game-winning, ridiculously high-scoring: QUIXOTRY.

Or perhaps you are taking a long flight somewhere. Trapped on your plane, you have concluded (in pen, because you are not without your own pride) 3/4 of the NY Times weekly crossword on your own, and you're feeling pretty good. But that last square--you know, the one on the bottom that has not one, not two, but three words you just can't figure out, so even the remaining letters fail to provide the clues you need to solve it--is just sitting there, mocking you with its empty squares.

Lucky for you, my Mom is on that plane.

With her trusty thesaurus and pocket dictionary, the Crossword Crusader makes short work of those final squares. When your plane lands, you saunter off nonchalantly, the finished crossword prominently displayed as you tuck your newspaper under your arm and depart the gate.

You can thank my Mom. The superhero.

Happy Mother's Day, Mom. I love you!

Between Me and You

Sand Dune Books has a great new series called Between Me And You™ ... a few things I’ve been meaning to ask. http://www.sanddunebooks.com

Basically, this series consists of journals with questions inside tailored specifically for the recipient: MOM, GRANDMA, HONEY, etc. You can give them to the people you love and the journals are returned with handwritten responses. You then have a great keepsake to cherish.

I know that, growing up, I used to hear great stories from my own grandmother. We used to say things like, "Did that really happen?" and "That would make a great book!" Of course, we never seemed to get around to recording any of her stories until it was too late.

My grandmother, my father's Mom, died when my youngest, the Rhino, was still a baby. She was undergoing treatment for cancer and, due to her compromised immune system, she could not even see the Rhino because, since he was getting his series of shots at the time, he could have made her seriously ill.

So the Rhino never met my Dad's mother, and he never got to hear her great stories.

I think these journals are a great idea, and when Winston over at Sand Dune books wrote to me about them, I wanted to share them with you, so you can keep the stories alive for your kids.

Incidentally, my father-in-law, a journalist, created a family newspaper for the grandkids with much the same idea as these journals, and I know our kids are going to cherish it as they grow older.

Check out the Between Me And You™ series over at http://www.sanddunebooks.com.

Love Thursday--School's Out

Yesterday, my boys had their last day of school for the year. I am so happy and excited for them both that my heart just swells with pride! Both of them did very well this year.

The Rhino got straight 'A's for the first time ever and won an award from the President. Yes, I do mean the actual President of the United States President! He has a processing problem and was able to go from struggling to excelling, and his teachers submitted his name because they thought he should be recognized. He has been, in a lot of ways, The Little Train That Could. Next year, he will start middle school. He had to say good-bye to the middle school he has gone to for the last seven years, from kindergarten to sixth grade, but he has his "BFF"s phone numbers and even a girl he kinda likes (I am sworn to secrecy and can't say any more than that!).

The Owl is so mature now that it's like talking to another adult when I have a conversation with him (except sometimes zombies come up during the discussion). He is taking on a challenging program of study in high school, which he starts in the Fall, that will require him to do extra homework this summer, as well as working on a "soccerbot" robotics program, and he hasn't complained a bit. He says he's looking forward to the challenge! It's hard for me to believe that he is entering high school in August!

I sit back and I see all that they have accomplished, and know they have their futures ahead of them, and that their lives are bright with promise, and I am so very thankful. I know how fortunate I am, and I know their Dad deserves much of the credit for the wonderful young men they are becoming, but I can't help feeling that somewhere along the way I must have done something right, too! Mostly, I just feel really lucky to be experiencing all this with them.

Congratulations, boys. I'm SO proud of you!

I Love Being A Mom!

I love it every day, not just Mother's Day. Even on those days when I get irritable or short-tempered, have cabin fever from tending a sick child or have to drive to soccer practice yet again.

But I have to admit I especially loved it yesterday, on Mother's Day.

My boys took good care of me yesterday.

The Owl made me a wonderful card ('from the 'superior son'--sibling rivalry never dies!), brimming with smiling faces and with these sweet words inside: "you always try to make things easier for us."

And the Rhino, on his delightful home-made card, had not one but several reasons why "you are a wonderful Mom"--I help him with his homework and projects, take care of the house, and--I have it in writing!--"you really are a cool Mom!"

Of course, he also had to take a stab at his older brother, labelling himself, 'the better son than' the Owl.

We didn't go out to eat or do anything particularly special, except I had breakfast in bed (pancakes! Yum!) and I requested cheeseburgers on the grill from the Engineer.

And then he gave me his card, "for the Mother of my children." And I was especially touched, because the Engineer had spent ages in the Hallmark store finding me a card that DIDN'T have silly matching-couplet rhymes that could be sung in tune with the "Yellow Rose of Texas." Instead, he found a nice, simple card that told me what I already knew:

I am loved.

The Rhino Writes!

We're back from Maui! I thought that my first post back from vacation would be some beautiful pics from the island (and they are coming soon!), but we returned to find something special has happened with the Rhino, so as a proud Mom, I am posting about that first!

The Rhino shares my love of reading and writing, and before we left for Maui, his class was assigned a writing assignment. It was very open: basically, the kids in the class just had to write and write as much as they could, wherever their imagination took them. I love that kind of assignment, that really lets the kids express themselves!

The Rhino chose to write about a knight and a dragon, and his story totalled 14 pages by the time the teacher announced it was time to stop writing.

The stories were read aloud to classmates at the school, and voted upon, and three stories were chosen to go on to the district level in a program called, "DQL." The acronym stands for, "Discovering Quality Literature."

And the Rhino's story was one of the three chosen!

So now we are rushing to get his story typed up and bound and given back to his wonderfully hardworking teachers over the weekend, so it can be sent off.

In our county, books that the kids submit through the DQL project, if chosen to go on, are shared at the district level and then become part of the school's library for other kids to read, to help motivate them to write as well!

So, we are very excited!
