Pick ProFlowers for Pretty Presents (And WIN a $50 Giftcode!)
Monday was my birthday, and I don't want to make you feel bad, but I didn't get your present. And Mother's Day (May 8th) is practically upon us! You had better get on that! ; )
Seriously, though, have you even THOUGHT about Mother's Day yet? I hadn't until recently, when I received a lovely Spring Time Sweets Tower from ProFlowers.
I've used ProFlowers myself for years (there's even a great coupons page with deals like free weekday delivery or a complimentary glass vase), and everyone I send an arrangement to always raves about how fresh and lovely the bouquets are, so it was really nice to be a recipient for a change!
First off, I was impressed with how FAST the delivery was! I picked the Springtime Sweets Tower out in the afternoon, and it arrived here early the next day, which is just lightning speed.
Next, this Springtime Sweets Tower? It's just the cutest presentation. I have three pretty pastel-pattered little hatboxes full of candy (yes, we have a sweet tooth here!), and each box contains Springtime salt water taffy, Spring mix foil-wrapped chocolates and yogurt-covered pretzels, and each bag of candy inside the box is separately wrapped.
Which is great, because being the sneaky Mom I am, I rearranged the bags so that I get more salt water taffy (my favorite), and my boys will each get a box with their favorites inside on Easter morning! So I have made three gifts out of one.
Maybe you should consider going with ProFlowers for your own gifts (or hint to your family that you'd love a Springtime arrangement for YOUR special day). They have a fabulous Mother's Day selection!
You know what? ProFlowers and I will even make it easy for you.

On Motherhood, and Superheroes
My Mom is a superhero.
It occurred to me this earlier in the week, when I listened to my regular radio station.
Two of the morning guys were putting together costumes in a bid to apply to the World Superhero Organization. Dee decided his alter ego was Blackout, while Taint was (this still makes me snicker) Walken, Texas Ranger. That's Walken, not Walker. As in Christopher Walken, with a dead-on impression to match. Hilarious.
Anyway, it occurred to me that there is a superhero, perhaps, lurking in all of us, just waiting to be discovered.
Only the thing is, I couldn't really figure out what I'm so good at that I would qualify for super powers, dammit.
But my Mom, now, that's a different story.
My Mom is the most selfless person I know. She would do anything for anyone at the drop of a hat. I know this is true because I have put it to the test more than once, calling on her and my father when I was in the hospital and needed someone to watch the boys because The Engineer was across the country (or even out of it) on business. I have asked for the same favor while we were away celebrating a birthday or an anniversary, or just when I was falling apart from stress and couldn't handle it any more.
Every time, my Mom would come through for me, even if it meant driving across the state at the last minute to be here.
And she does the same thing for her own Mom and siblings.
My Mom is the oldest of six brothers and sisters (though I think she looks the youngest). Despite living on a fixed income herself, Mom and Dad chip in financially to make sure her own mother, my grandmother, is cared for now that she has reached her mid-nineties(!). Great-grandma, in fact, is a bit of a superhero herself. Here she is with a painting she made last month.

But back to Mom. She is, as I say, one of six kids, and she helped raise her younger brothers and sisters. Maybe that's why she can remember the names and birth dates of all of their kids, and their kids' spouses, and all of their children, too. I don't know how she does it, because I can't, and I'm mumble mumble years old.
But although I may forget my own niece and nephews' birthdays occasionally, or neglect to call my two wonderful brothers-in-law when they are celebrating, my Mom never lets anyone's special day pass without notice.
My Mom is also a very private person, though. She wouldn't want to go around having anyone treat her as Mother Teresa despite her caring and empathetic nature. So, even though I think she deserves it, I wouldn't make her superhero alter-ego be Super Selfless. That's much too showy for Mom.
Instead, I'd draw on her other talents to create that superhero persona.
First of all, Mom is fantastic with language. When I was growing up, Mom was always working on a novel that she never really finished. I think her unpublished status is due more to modesty than a lack of perseverance, because Mom never gave up on anything.
Her love of language makes her excel at word games, scramblets, crossword puzzles and the like. She loves Scrabble and can always find that seven-letter word hiding in the tiles. So that's a good place to start.
I also don't think Mom'd want some silly sidekick hanging around, dragging her down, when she was performing her heroics. Mom's the kind of person that likes to get things done. She's really organzied, and she does well on her own.
So, that's what we have to work with--a lone avenger who loves any kind of linguistic challenge.
So (prepare yourself for ingenious superhero name time!) I have decided that my Mom would make the perfect....
Crossword Crusader!
That's right. Imagine the scenario: you're stuck in the middle of a Scrabble game. You're down by fifty points and your tile rack holds an umpromising combination of U I R Y O X Q. You're about to concede defeat when...
In swoops the Crossword Crusader!
Dressed in comfortable loungewear (because she has far too much fashion sense to opt for skin-tight spandex), a pencil tucked handily behind her ear, a thesaurus in one pocket and a dictionary in another, she reaches down with lightning speed and rearranges your letters, playing them on a T for the game-winning, ridiculously high-scoring: QUIXOTRY.
Or perhaps you are taking a long flight somewhere. Trapped on your plane, you have concluded (in pen, because you are not without your own pride) 3/4 of the NY Times weekly crossword on your own, and you're feeling pretty good. But that last square--you know, the one on the bottom that has not one, not two, but three words you just can't figure out, so even the remaining letters fail to provide the clues you need to solve it--is just sitting there, mocking you with its empty squares.
Lucky for you, my Mom is on that plane.
With her trusty thesaurus and pocket dictionary, the Crossword Crusader makes short work of those final squares. When your plane lands, you saunter off nonchalantly, the finished crossword prominently displayed as you tuck your newspaper under your arm and depart the gate.
You can thank my Mom. The superhero.

Great Mother's Day Gifts (hint, hint)
With Mother's Day just around the corner, we've put together a list of some of our favorite gift ideas here at Cool Moms Rule. We've even separated it by price to make it even easier to treat Mom on your budget.
Moms: Feel free to print up this post and "accidentally" leave it lying around the house. Sometimes the family needs a little reminder. Or treat yourself or your own Mom to something special (because cool Grandmas rule, too!).
Mother's Day Gifts Under $75

For the new Mom who's still nursing, these soft, comfy and yet still stylish wrap nursing pajamas from BabyCenter.com are the perfect choice. The set includes a hip-length, sleeveless pullover wrap top and cropped pants with an under-the-belly elastic waist in a machine washable cotton/spandex blend.

When it comes to flowers, you can't go wrong with Proflowers.com, the only florist Viv ever uses. Check out this gorgeous, "Graceful Bouquet," at $59.99, overflowing with tulips, lilies and snapdragons. You can find other bouquets for as little as 29.99 plus shipping available at their site.
Gifts Under $50
Among the Moms I asked, Clinique's Happy is the very favorite 'Mom' perfume, and this Happy gift set comes just in time for Mother's Day. With over $59 worth of fragrance products, it retails for just $48.50 and includes Happy perfume spray, rollerball (perfect for her purse), and body cream in this sweet orange flowered bag. Available at Macy's, Dillard's and other fine stores carrying Clinique products.

Next is the Pink Hot Chocolate Making Set, from Bonjour, available at Cooking.com. For every purchase made from now until July 31st, Bonjour will make a $3.00 donation to Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help fund breast cancer research. And who doesn't like chocolate?!
Gifts Under $25
Again from Babycentral.com comes two great gift ideas, each one a gift that Mom will treasure for years.
Baby of Mine: a journal of her baby's first year, lets Mom chronicle all those important "firsts" like that very first tooth. The title makes us think of the sweetest, saddest scene from Dumbo, when a chained-up Mama elephant sings to her little elephant dude.
There's also Between Me and You, Mom: a journal written by the kids, sharing their love for Mom through the written word (if that one won't tear you up, nothing will!). A great way to connect with the kids and share some quiet time together for Mother's Day without breaking the budget, either of these journals make a lovely gift for any Mom
Note: Cool Mom's Rule DID NOT receive any commissions from these companies or products! These are simply some of our own personal favorite gift ideas for Moms (including ourselves!). ~Viv

I Love Being A Mom!
I love it every day, not just Mother's Day. Even on those days when I get irritable or short-tempered, have cabin fever from tending a sick child or have to drive to soccer practice yet again.
But I have to admit I especially loved it yesterday, on Mother's Day.
My boys took good care of me yesterday.
The Owl made me a wonderful card ('from the 'superior son'--sibling rivalry never dies!), brimming with smiling faces and with these sweet words inside: "you always try to make things easier for us."
And the Rhino, on his delightful home-made card, had not one but several reasons why "you are a wonderful Mom"--I help him with his homework and projects, take care of the house, and--I have it in writing!--"you really are a cool Mom!"
Of course, he also had to take a stab at his older brother, labelling himself, 'the better son than' the Owl.
We didn't go out to eat or do anything particularly special, except I had breakfast in bed (pancakes! Yum!) and I requested cheeseburgers on the grill from the Engineer.
And then he gave me his card, "for the Mother of my children." And I was especially touched, because the Engineer had spent ages in the Hallmark store finding me a card that DIDN'T have silly matching-couplet rhymes that could be sung in tune with the "Yellow Rose of Texas." Instead, he found a nice, simple card that told me what I already knew:
I am loved.
