The Fat Lady Is Singing

Lee's National Denim Day is over, and so is our contest for two of your favorite jeans. In a moment, I'll be announcing the winner (I know you are all excited about that, I am too!).

But first, the results of our fund-raising.

Sadly, we didn't reach our goal of $150. We got close, I donated (twice!) myself, and I admit I'm disappointed we didn't make it.

But I appreciate each and every one of you who commented, tweeted, blogged, posted and helped spread the word about this important issue. Any more awareness about breast cancer and the need for more research is a GOOD thing. So let's give ourselves a pat on the back for our efforts.

And I want to give a very special, and heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you who donated. I know that we're used to the internet providing us with information and entertainment free of charge, and asking people to step up and spend money was tough for me, even though I knew this was a good cause. And I also know that times are tough and a lot of us don't have extra money to give, no matter how much we might want to.

So, again, thank you to the very special people who made that extra effort and found it in their hearts to give. I love you all.

Thanks to you, we raised $130!

Oh, and here's how the other bloggers working with Lee for National Denim Day did (and wow, are you going to be amazed and impressed with the "first place" blog's efforts! I know I was floored myself):

 Wendy Will Blog - $1,725
Periwinkle Papillon - $475
Cool Moms Rule  - $130
The IE Mommy - $48
All Things Chic - $30
Family Life in Las Vegas - $15
Laughing Lindsay - $10
A Frugal Friend - $0
Shop With Me Mama - $0
The Mom Reviews - $0

And now, without further ado, the winner of TWO pairs of her favorite jeans (chosen by random integer generator):

So, comment #40 was our winner! And that was....(drum roll)

lewalk(at)hotmail(dot)com!

Congratulations!

Lewalk, I'm emailing you right now to get all your information on those jeans!

Thanks again, everyone!

Born to HandVibe, Baby? Our New Giveaway Puts a Ring on It

Kids love to collect things. For some, it's action figures, others like trading cards, and I'm sure you've seen those rubber bands in strange shapes all over the place lately.

HandVibes remind me of those rubber bands, except, to me, make more sense than those do (it's hard to tell what the shapes are supposed to be sometimes, and because they ARE shapes, they don't really fit kids' wrists all that well).

HandVibes are rubber novelty rings that any kid can wear. They come in different colors and include savings like “Rad,” “BFF,” “Epic,” “Dude,” “Boo-Yah,” and lots more. There's actually 25 unique sayings, 9 vibrant colors, and when you add in the hard-to-find 10 emoticon☺ designs (!),  a total of 235 unique rings in all (huh. Never thought I'd actually use all that "permuations" stuff from Algebra. Go figure).

Personally, I like  (heh) the two-thumbs-up Handvibe, perfect for Facebook fans (naturally, HandVibes have their own Facebook page, too), and the "Dude" and "Bro" ones, because my teenagerss use those words all the time.

So I showed the HandVibes to the Rhino, who is technically a bit older than the target age range (I'm thinking more tweens and early teens), and still he thought they were pretty cool.

Adding to the collectability of HandVibes is the packaging.  HandVibes are sold in packs with two visible rings, plus a third ‘Mystery Ring’ contained in a hidden compartment. That 'Mystery Ring' might just be one of the ten rare blue swirl or black emoticon designs, featuring smiley faces, winks, smirks and more, which are randomly inserted into just one out of every six ring packs. So every purchase has an added element of surprise as kids discover if their Mystery Ring is one of the rare emoticon designs.

Viv's take: I think HandVibes are fun and colorful, and let kids show a little 'attitude' without being disruptive or disrespectful. They're age-appropriate for tweens and young teens, but also appeal to older kids. Plus HandVibes aren't expensive, so even frugal, budget-conscious Moms can indulge (or reward) their kids and not break the bank...

...Especially if you WIN some!

HandVibes are graciously offering one lucky Cool Moms Rule! reader TWO packages, for a total of 6 HandVibes (and two chances to get rare collectable rings!).

Here's how you can enter the giveaway (required):

Visit the HandVibes website to see all the possible combinations, then leave a comment below this post with which Handvibes ring (color and saying or emoticon) is your favorite!

Additional entries! (Optional and awesome):
  • Tweet about this giveaway (you follow me, right?), using #Handvibes.
  • Follow us on Blogger, or subscribe to our feed (one extra entry each).
  • Add this giveaway to any contest listing.
  • Like HandVibes on Facebook. They'd really love you to help them get the word out about their product--THREE extra entries!
  • Add our button to your site (check the middle sidebar for the code). This is also worth THREE extra entries!
  • Add a blog post about this giveaway and you'll get another THREE entries!
  • Donate ANY AMOUNT to our team in the fight against breast cancer before National Denim Day, October 7th! FIVE extra entries!

That's it! Contest runs until Friday, October 14th. Open to readers with U.S. shipping addresses only, please.
Good Luck!

I received two packs of HandVibes to facilitate this review. In addition, HandVibes are providing two 3-packs for this reader giveaway.

THQ uDraw Your City Contest = Best Prize Package Ever?

I want to give a shout-out to the "uDraw Your City" contest for kids because the geniuses over at THQ have put together a fun and creative giveaway with perhaps the best prize package I have ever seen for kids and their parents.

From September 1st to October 1st, kids from age 6 to 17 (in other words, elementary, middle and high school kids) are invited to create a piece of artwork that represents what their hometown or home city means to them, for a chance to win a prize package worth more than $25,000, which includes:

  • $10,000 cash prize that the winner can choose to apply toward a college scholarship.
  • $10,000 to the winner’s school of choice to help support the school’s art program.
  • An HDTV.
  • A video game console (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Wii).
  • A uDraw GameTablet.
  • A host of uDraw games for the innovative device.
  • A Gamestop gift card.
See what I mean? You've got money for their school now, money to use college later, and just plain fun for the winning kid, all included in that prize package!

Whoever put that package together really deserves some kudos. It's clear that THQ is a company that not only markets products for kids but actually gets kids, and has combined education, creativity, productivity and play together for a contest and prize package that will appeal to them (while also making their parents happy with that educational funding!).

Seriously, ya'll, I am not being compensated in any way for this post, I have no ties to THQ, but I am a big fan now.

Don't know what "uDraw" and the "uDraw Game Tablet" are?  Watch this (very cool) video:

Remember, kids can enter their original artwork from September 1st to October 1st. THQ will announce the winner on November 11th. For more information, head to the uDraw You City contest website.

Disney Tangled Giveaway!

Disney's take on the classic fairytale, Rapunzel, comes out on November 24th, and Cool Moms Rule! has an incredible giveaway to commemorate the event.

The movie, entitled Tangled (just in case you live in a cave and haven't heard all the buzz) follows the antics of a newly-envisioned, feisty Rapunzel, who is not content to just sit around in a tower waiting to be rescued:
When the kingdom’s most wanted—and most charming—bandit Flynn Rider (voice of Zachary Levi) is taken hostage by Rapunzel (voice of Mandy Moore), a feisty teen with 70 feet of golden hair who’s looking for her ticket out of the tower where she’s been locked away for years, the unlikely duo sets off on a hilarious, hair-raising escapade filled with adventure, heart, humor and hair—lots of hair.
I'm really looking forward to this one myself!

- Female fit Rapunzel t-shirt in Adult and Youth sizes (S, M, L, XL)
- General fit Flynn Rider t-shirt in Adult and Youth sizes (S, M, L, XL)
- General fit Pascal t-shirt in Adult and Youth sizes (S, M, L, XL)
- Silly Bandz – set of 4 characters (Rapunzel, Flynn, Pascal, Maximus)

To enter to WIN a Tangled t-shirt featuring one of the three main characters and a slew of Silly Bandz, just leave a comment below this post with your favorite Disney heroine!  Contest runs through November 24th, the opening day of Tangled. Three winners will be chosen (one T-shirt and Silly Bandz set each)!

Are You Pillsbury People? You could win a $10,000 kitchen makeover!

I always love getting a package in the mail, and last week I opened up a box that really had me smiling.

It was full of Pillsbury products!

I have such a sweet tooth; it really is a weakness of mine, and one of the reasons I was especially pleased to see that included in the box were some new, sugar-free selections from Pillsbury.  Reviews for these, as well as some other tasty treats (mini-brownies filled with raspberry or caramel! Yum!) are coming up soon.

Because I think everyone really does have a bit of a sweet tooth and a favorite sweet treat, I wanted to share  the Pillsbury® People Essay Contest with you.
Not only is it a fun contest that lets you share your favorite recipes, but you have a chance to win a $10,000 kitchen makeover by simply indulging in your favorite home-baked desserts and sharing your story with Pillsbury!

From now through December 20, 2010, fans of Pillsbury Baking Mixes, Frostings and Flours are asked to submit a short story on www.PillsburyBaking.com about why they love baking and why they consider themselves Pillsbury People.

One lucky person will win $10,000 towards a kitchen makeover.

Additionally, three runners-up will receive a digital camera and a Pillsbury Gift Basket with Pillsbury Baking products and branded items.

And of course, everyone who visits the site will find fabulous recipes, just in time for holiday baking!

Seventh Generation Giveaway!

Replacing what’s currently under your sink with products that are non-toxic and safe for the environment is easier than ever with Seventh Generation’s environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Leading the “responsible cleaning” charge for the past twenty years, Seventh Generation has tapped into the disinfecting power of the herb thyme, to introduce an EPA registered line of disinfecting sprays and wipes that kill germs* naturally! The new line of botanical disinfectant cleaners includes a multi-surface cleaning spray, bathroom cleaning spray and wipes.

I had a chance to try out some Seventh Generation cleaning products, including
a disinfecting multi-surface cleaner, bathroom cleaner, wipes and two rolls of 100% recycled, unbleached paper towels.

First off, I love the paper towels, because who needs bleach in their paper towels, for heaven's sake? All it does is make them white. These paper towels are brown, and that's fine with me. I'm going to use them to wipe up stains, after all!

The bathroom cleaner and disinfecting multi-purpose surface cleaner definitely do the job.

One caveat: the scent takes some getting used to. I don't care for it, myself, but knowing that it is
thymol, a component of the herb thyme, that can be used on hard surfaces including counter tops, plastic cutting boards, highchair trays as well as children’s toys makes it more palatable. I like the idea of going as natural as possible with cleaners, especially for anyone who has kids and pets in the home.

Seventh Generation has partnered with eco-lifestyle consultant and author, Alexandra Zissu, whose new book, The Conscious Kitchen, discusses what’s good for your health, what’s good for the planet and what tastes great. Her book also includes great tips on maintaining a green and healthy kitchen, including:

Change is Good
Choosing cleaning products without indoor air pollutants like volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, is a simple and effective way to reduce your indoor air pollution. If you’re not prepared to switch everything overnight, start by swapping out the one product you use the most, and moving forward from there.

Think before you spray
Residues from cleaning products can last on a surface for longer than we we’d like to know and travel to areas that we sometimes don’t intend them to. Don’t contaminate your food by prepping it on a surface that may contain harsh chemical residues - rinse cleaning products from food preparation surfaces carefully or use botanical disinfecting cleaners that do not require a rinse step.

Home is Where the Clean Is
Your standard cleaners are good for removing soils and dirt from kitchen surfaces, but to tackle germs you need a cleaner that is effective against microbes like bacteria and viruses. Many cleaners contain ingredients that have antimicrobial properties such as vinegar or hydrogen peroxide, but the germ killing power of these is not necessarily guaranteed. To be sure you are killing germs, use an EPA registered disinfectant. Seventh Generation tapped into the disinfecting power of the common garden herb thyme, to provide a disinfecting cleaner that kills germs* naturally.

Make the Old New Again
Think twice about the items that you’re using to clean and dry your kitchen equipment and dishes. Use rags (like old t-shirts and washcloths) instead of paper towels. If you aren’t prepared to kick your paper towel addiction just yet, use only recycled versions that are unbleached or haven’t been whitened with chemicals containing chlorine and see how long you can make a roll last.

The Writing is on the … Sponge
Be sure to read the fine print on sponges and only purchase those that do not contain antimicrobial pesticides. Remember to store sponges in a dry place and frequently clean them by popping plastic sponges wet in a microwave for two minutes or boiling sponges for three minutes in water.

Mom Was Right, Wash Your Hands
Wash your hands with soap and water before and after prepping food, and always before eating. So much of what can be potentially harmful in a kitchen can be reduced by this simple act that doesn’t require any harsh chemicals whatsoever.

Seventh Generation and BlogSpark want to give one lucky Cool Moms Rule! reader a complete cleaning kit! The "Disinfection Cleaning Kit" includes the multi-surface cleaner, bathroom cleaner, two rolls of unbleached paper towels, wipes, a cleaning caddy to hold it all, and a copy of The Conscious Kitchen!

Kohl's Cares for Kids--and you--With Dr. Seuss and a Giveaway!

What does $5 get you these days? At Kohl’s, it gets a classic children’s book, a huggable Dr. Suess friend, a New York Times best-seller on how to live a greener life, and that great feeling you get when giving back!

The Kohl’s Care for Kids® program, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is a charitable program that features $5 merchandise with 100 percent of net profit benefiting children’s health and education initiatives nationwide. This spring, the Kohl’s Cares for Kids program is featuring four Dr. Suess books and coordinating plush toys for just $5 each:

· The Lorax - Lorax plush
· The Foot Book – Orange “Foot” Character plush
· Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! – Yellow “Thinks” Character plush
· If I Ran the Circus – Whale plush

As the number one green retailer, according to Newsweek’s 2009 ranking, Kohl’s is pleased to offer The Lorax at such an incredible value to help kids learn the importance of caring for the environment. Also, all four Dr. Seuss books that are offered as part of the Kohl’s Cares for Kids® program are printed on 60 percent post-consumer recycled paper. For adults, that message is found in The Green Book. This book is a handbook on how to take steps to be more environmentally responsible.

This spring, get reading, go green and give back to your local community – all for just $5 at Kohl’s. Items can be purchased at more than 1,000 Kohl’s stores nationwide and at www.kohls.com.

Viv's Take: I had a chance to review the plush animals and book set--all four Dr. Seuss books and the matching plush creatures, plus The Green Book--and I was really impressed! First of all, the Dr. Seuss books are classics, as we all know. Kids love the rhyming and alliteration and will beg you to read them again and again.

The plush Dr. Seuss figures are not only cute as can be, but really generously sized. I would expect to pay two or three times as much than the $5 price, without the book, just for one of these cuddly guys, and to get both at such a low price is a great deal.
Here's a pic of them sitting on my bed. Last night, I propped the books up in front of them and had them sitting with their arms around each other (well, except for the whale), "reading", when the Engineer came in to bed.

The Green Book has lots of simple, everyday solutions for making your own life "greener", with names like Ellen Degeneres and Robert Redford offering their tips. Lots of star power in this little green volume, folks.

But here's the best part:

FIVE OF YOU will win a Dr. Seuss set in this Cool Moms Rule Giveaway!

To enter, leave a comment below with your favorite Dr. Seuss book or character (required for initial entry).

Additional (optional) entry methods:
  • Tweet about this giveaway using #kohls so I can find it!
  • Blog about this giveaway and leave the link below.
  • Subscribe to our RSS feed.
Contest ends Friday, February 19th. Good luck!

As I mentioned in my post, I received a free set of the Dr. Seuss plush and books to aid in this review. I'm giving them to the local shelter. The winners of the giveaway will have the prizes sent directly to them from the providers of this giveaway.

Healthy Lunches (not just for kids) And A Contest, Too!

Processed meats and preservatives don't make the best choices when it comes to a healthy lifestyle--but that's what's in many school lunches. When it comes to preparing and dishing out hundreds of meals a day, most schools have to opt in favor of long shelf life items bought in bulk, and sometimes good nutrition takes a back seat to budget concerns.

So how can you, with budget concerns of your own, make healthy choices for your kids? And while you're at it, what are you eating these days?

Brown-bagging your own lunch can actually save you money--an average of packed lunch runs around $3.25 as opposed to the $8-10 you'd spend eating out--and with Earthbound Farm organic foods, you don't have to substitute quality for cost.

Earthbound Farm sent me some of their certified organic snack items, conveniently packaged in snack-size servings, to try out.

And they. were. Awesome.

The Apple Slices were crisp and juicy and not too tart. They come in 5 2 oz bags for $3.99, so that's a week's worth of apple's for school lunches! They also make a great snack.
When the kids want a 'big' lunch, we'll pair them up with some peanut butter for dipping or a sharp cheddar cheese and crackers, but they're fine on their own.

I also tried out the mini carrots Earthbound Farm offers.

We've always called them 'baby' carrots, and I think they are my favorite vegetable (don't raw vegetables just taste better?). Earthbound Farm's Mini-Peeled Carrots snack pack comes with 10 2 oz bags for $2.99, and these were as fresh and firm as could be, as well as having that natural sweetness that makes me such a fan. Since the Owl has braces, he can't eat these right now, but these would last the Rhino and I a school week as well in our lunches.

In addition to the tasty, healthy organic snacks I sampled, Earthbound Farm also offers these favorites, all certified organic:
  • Organic Carrot Dippers with Ranch Dressing. Another great way to get more veggies! (3 packs for $2.89)
  • Grab & Go Salads: Caesar Salad, Mixed Baby Greens or Baby Spinach Kits. These salads are a convenient choice for Moms on the go, as the box ($3.69) includes everything you need: salad, dressing, topping, even the fork and the clamshell package (which can be used as a bowl). Smart!
  • Organic Raisin snack packs. Why don't I eat more raisins? I don't know, because they're sweet and juicy and I grew up with them (my Mom likes healthy snacks too!). (6 1.5oz boxes for $2.99)
Earthbound Farm also has a contest going on right now for your kids! I'm including all the information just as I received it so I don't mess anything up ; ) :

Earthbound Farm has some news for your readers. The company has just launched a web-based contest seeking quotes from children for the inside of its clamshell salad labels. Kids will be encouraged to submit quotes thanking those who purchase organic for helping protect the future. If you’re interested in posting this contest on your site for your readers participation please let me know.

For each child’s quote that is chosen, they have the opportunity to win:

1. A $500 US Savings Bond for your child’s future education

2. A $500 donation in your child’s name to their choice of one of these dedicated nonprofit environmental organizations:
American Forests
Beyond Pesticides
Environmental Working Group
Healthy Child Healthy World
Natural Resources Defense Council
Organic Farming Research Foundation
Pesticide Action Network North America
Union of Concerned Scientists

3. Winning quotes will appear on the back of our new salad labels and on the Earthbound Farm website!

We’ve switched to post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic for our salad containers, and we’re designing new labels that carry the PCR symbol. Winning quotes will appear on the back of those labels, and on our website, too. We’ll add a new winner every month through the end of 2009!

To enter the contest, visit http://www.ebfarm.com/Products/KidsQuoteContest.aspx

This contest is open to legal US residents who submit their entry with the permission of their parent or guardian, and who are 17 years of age or under at that time. Winning quotes will be identified by first name, age, and city/state on the Earthbound Farm website and on package labels. Parents or guardians must provide their name, e-mail address and daytime phone number in case their child’s entry is a winner. Either adult or child must provide their Social Security Number to receive their prize and register their bond. Earthbound Farm respects your privacy; we won’t share your personal information with anyone else.

Viv notes: This contest is SUPER easy to enter! Just click on the link, and have your kid(s) finish this quote, in 35 words or less: Thank you for choosing organic. It matters to me because ______________________.

Check out our listing for Guitar Hero on Tour: Decades and WIN one of 5 copies!

You may remember that when I posted our original Gifts for Gamers listing in the Cool Moms Rule! Holiday Gift Guide, I hadn't yet received a review copy of Guitar Hero on Tour: Decades.

Well, my fabulous contact not only came through for me, making sure I did get that review copy, she came through for you, too, in a BIG way, offering five copies of Activision's Guitar Hero on Tour: Decades for the Nintendo DS for us to GIVE AWAY here on Cool Moms Rule!

So, here's how this giveaway is going to work. Since we need five winners, we are going to do this a bit differently. I've named five bands in my amended Gifts for Gamers post that are available in the game. To win one of our five Guitar Hero on Tour: Decades games, you need to find those names and mention one in a comment below THIS POST.

Now, here's the thing: I'm going to assign one copy of the game for each band named. So, say some bands were Queen and Kiss (WARNING: THOSE ARE NOT ELIGIBLE MUSICIANS), everybody that named Queen in their comment would be in the running for one copy of the game and everybody who named Kiss would be in a running for a different copy of the game. Got it?

Now, naturally you'll want to try to pick an artist that not too many others have picked, so you'll have the best chance at winning your own copy of Guitar Hero on Tour: Decades.

Or, maybe you will want to hedge your bets, and enter five times, one for each artist. Can you do that? Sure, if you follow the rules!

Here's how you can do that: use an additional entry method, and for each one, make sure you include a musician from the Gifts for Gamers post in that entry, too. You can enter several times with the same band name, or once for each band, it's up to you, but you have to use an additional entry method after the first comment.

Here are the additional entry methods:
  • Blog about this post and include the link.
  • Tweet about this contest, and include a link to the Tweet.
  • Add my badge to your blog.
  • Subscribe to Cool Moms Rule!
  • Visit GiveRespect.org
There you go! You can have up to SIX entries, including that first comment.

Deadline for entries is December 22, Winner announced December 23rd. Don't forget to include your email!

Good luck!

About Giveaways

By the way, I post all my giveaways here at Cool Moms Rule! over on Prizey, a contest promotion website. If you aren't already a member, I highly recommend you check Prizey out.

If you just like to enter giveaways, you can subscribe to their feed, and have current contests from your favorite blogs show up right in your email.

If you are a blog that hosts giveaways, I find that Prizey does a great job of getting the message out to interested folks, so that they can find your blog and enter! Listings are free. If you want to go the extra mile, you can put up a Premium listing, with a photo of the prize, by earning points on Prizey or paying a small fee ($5).

If you do sign up at Prizey, please list Cool Moms Rule as your referral! That lets me earn extra points which allows me to put a premium listing up on Prizey for my readers here.

Thanks!

My pretty kitty takes the prize!

This is one of my THREE cats (yes, I know, I am this [] close to being the crazy cat lady!), and the newest addition over at The Cheezits: Fancy, our "good luck" black cat.

Colby and Cheddar entered her in a contest over at Everything Up Close:

“Oh HAI! Dat cool pink collar with the black skulls would look BOOtiful on our sister kitty, Fancy! She's a black cat and she needs a new collar for Halloween. We hopes we win!"

And Fancy won the collar from Miss Moustache!

So, to us, this PROVES that black cats are good luck, not bad!

I'm posting about it here as well as over at The Cheezits, because Everything Up Close really does have some wonderful giveaways. For example, right now they are running a new giveaway for a beautiful apron, and I believe the contest for some lovely Etsy necklaces is still going on.

In addition, Everything Up Close also lists other contests running around the blogosphere. I personally have subscribed to to the site's feed, so I can keep track of all the prizes up for grabs.

So go take a look! And, if you sign up for a contest, tell them Viv sent you! : )
