I love the Lorax. That movie was so freaky and when I was little it really scared me that all the trees were going to disappear in real life just like they did in the movie.

My husband had never seen the Lorax so we watched it one day on TV and he turned it off after about 10 minutes because he said it was very disturbing how "dark" and "grim" it was.

I saw the plush at Kohls the last time I was there about a month ago. I so wanted the Lorax but we didn't have the $$$ for him.

Thanks for the great giveaway.

No One Died

I love Ricky Gervais.

Yesterday, he was on The View, talking about his stint as host of the Golden Globes, and some of the little jabs he took at the celebrities, as well as the new animated series he has coming up. The cartoon stars Gervais and two friends just having totally off-the-cuff conversations. He unabashedly admits that one of his friends, who has "a completely round head" is inadvertently funny--meaning that sometimes he just says things that make no sense at all, and that's where the humor comes from.

So, summing it all up today, when asked how his performance on The View went, Ricky Gervais said, "No one died. That's about all you can hope for nowadays. No one died."

I love that he doesn't take himself seriously.

But you know who DOES?

The Jersey Shore cast.

I've never watched The Jersey Shore, but I'm familiar with Snooki and The Situation, mostly through parodies of them on Saturday Night Live. I didn't realize how close the parodies are to the real deal until yesterday.

Joy Behar went just nuts with them, grilling them relentlessly on serious topics (she admitted this morning to Barbara, as a matter of fact, that she has a personal issue with kids like this group, having been teased for being a smart kid when she was in school).

So, anyway, Joy was asking questions like, "Are you saving money?" "Do you use condoms" (!) and "Where do you see yourselves in twenty years?"

Which naturally had the Jersey Shore group, who after all are very young, looking blank and a bit defensive, though a couple stepped up to say yes, they had some money put aside.

But Snooki, when asked what she attributed her amazing popularity to, said calmly, "Well, just look at me!" She also said, basically, that she dressed stylishly and had nice hair (she looks like a commercial for those hairstyle things, Bump-Its).

And that was it.

She's famous for....not much.

And The Situation appears to be famous for having a nickname.

Yet the whole group is just so thrilled and smugly satisfied to be in the spotlight.

It was, to me, at least, a little sad.

I mean, this is just a group of kids who has stumbled into their fifteen minutes of fame, and they don't seem to realize that they are just famous for being famous. I can certainly understand they don't have a big long-range plan, but they seem to accept the fanfare and adulation as their due.

And it's so obvious to the objective observer that there just isn't anything to justify that attitude. Their fame is not going to last. It's a fleeting thing.

And when it fades out, The View will be there, I guess, to document the Next Big Thing.

But I still think it's sad that so many young people these days seem to aspire to have just what The Jersey Shore crew has--fame for the sake of being famous.

Thank goodness for comics like Ricky Gervais, to put it all in perspective when we start to take ourselves too seriously.

I am a participant in a Mom Central campaign for ABC Daytime and will receive a tote bag or other The View branded items to facilitate my review.

I'm sick...will you marry me?

So the title of this post is not exactly the kind of romantic proposal anyone dreams of, is it?

But with healthcare becoming so expensive in the U.S., sometimes marriage is the best answer to paying those bills.

Especially when one of you has a "pre-existing condition." GRAR. Those words out to be outlawed. The whole reason you buy insurance is because you want to be covered in any eventuality, right? So, you're sick, you figure you need health insurance. And what happens? Sick people get turned away because they are ill.

That's...well, that's sick.

Meet one woman who is trying to take charge of her own healthcare by actively searching for a mate based on his insurance, on her site, WillMarryForHealthInsurance.

Born with an immune deficiency, Terri Carlson realized that, after her divorce, she was running out of time under her ex-spouse's insurance coverage. Soon, she would be unable to afford her own medical bills.

Stuck, Teri considered robbing a bank--in jail, she'd get three square meals a day, a place to work out and health coverage--but decided she'd rather find a husband than share a cell.

If you think she's the exception to the rule, by the way, you might be surprised. I heard about this woman and her website through Metafilter, and throughout the discussion, more and more members came in to say that, although they loved their spouses, what ultimately pushed them into making the arrangement official was, indeed, the insurance issue.

It's ironic that the healthcare "debate" has been derailed by politicians that already have the best healthcare in the country (though apparently Microsoft gets kudos as well for their care. Apple, why don't you step up the plate, too, and make this Mac fangirl proud?).

So, Congress, let's stop all this nonsense talk of how a national healthcare plan will turn as all into socialists, like that was some kind of one-way ticket to hell in the first place.

How about we just resolve, once and for all, that affordable healthcare is a right everyone deserves, and GET. IT.DONE. already?

Check Out The View From Up Here (hey, I can see my house!)

I'm so excited to announce that Mom Central has chosen me as an (dah da da da DAH) official The View Brand Ambassador!

I just love The View and watch it every day (it's on ABC at 11 am where I am), which is why I applied to the program.

So many times at least one of the lovely ladies of The View mirrors my own view.

Of course, frequently another one of them gets me all worked up!

But that's all part and parcel of healthy debate, which is what I like about the show. It's not just celebrity appearances, though there are plenty of those as well, but intelligent discourse among women like me, especially during the Hot Topics portion of the show.

As a woman who has been a stay-at-home Mom for many years now, it is SO nice to hear adult conversation! And now, as an Ambassador for The View I feel like I am part of the panel myself.

This morning, for instance, the Hot Topics discussion featured the male figure skaters from last night's Olympic coverage. Now, I stayed up way too late watching the men skate, and let me tell you, I was blown away. I missed Yevgeny Plushenko's quadruple jump, unfortunately, but Evan Lysacek, of the USA, looks like Sylar from Heroes to me, and he skated sublimely even in a feathery bird suit. I thought that Johnny Weir, also of the US, was just a blast to watch and should have been awarded a much higher score, and he reminds me of a young Johnny Depp. The Japanese skater Takahashi's moves were sharp and strong and kept me riveted throughout the whole routine, and France's Brian Joubert, justly known for his spinning looked, as Elizabeth remarked this morning on The View, like he could drill a hole in the ice with his skates, he was turning so fast!

Other relevant topics this morning (to me, anyway) included a discussion about healthy women and fashion, models being perhaps too thin, and how the tide is turning towards a more voluptuous silhouette like Christina Hendricks of Mad Men. And since I had just posted on CH over on Metafilter,(a post which garnered a lot of discussion, some insults and offense and over 200+ comments), I felt very In the Know this morning.

I also have the pleasure of announcing the exciting The View sweepstakes that’s currently being run by Mom Central.

One lucky winner will be randomly selected to receive a trip to New York City to watch a taping of The View!

The sweepstakes is open until February 28th. Here is a link to the sign-up survey!

I am a participant in a Mom Central campaign for ABC Daytime and will receive a tote bag or other The View branded items to facilitate my review(s).

Cherish Your Time as a Couple

Tonight is Date Night for the Engineer and me, which I look forward to all week.

The Engineer works really hard, pretty much round the clock, and there will be nights where, what with his working long hours to begin with, then coming home to work some more on his laptop, and THEN the occasional overseas call in the evening (to offset the 12-hour time difference), we fall into bed and he falls asleep right away. Or he nods off in front of the television, before we even have brushed our teeth! I'm a Night Owl, and I admit to getting a little frustrated with this (though I'm happy to snuggle in my bed a little later in the morning than he does and sleep in whenever I can). Sometimes, it's just hard to connect with your spouse.

And we're the lucky ones. I know how hard it can be to make time for just the two of you when the kids are little and more demanding of your time and energy.

So if I had one tip for couples, with Valentine's Day coming up, it would be to make special time for each other, just the two of you, all year round.

This month, K-Y Brand is introducing its new Couples Place Website, a resource for couples looking to strengthen their connection with each other. The site will feature advice and commentary from the nation's leading relationship and sexual health experts.

When you visit the Couples Place Website, you can also enter in a contest to be selected as "America's Top Couple!" The winning couple receives a trip to New York City to participate in a professional photo shoot and be featured in a national magazine. Wouldn't that just be amazing? You'd feel like movie stars in your own romantic comedy (well, if it were my life, it would definitely lean to the comedy side).

You may also have noticed the ads on TV with couples enjoying K-Y Brand intimacy enhancement products, a new line introduced in recent years to further help couples make the most of their connection behind the bedroom door, like Yours + Mine couples lubricant and Intense arousal gel for her.

I like that K-Y understands that we sometimes have to make the most of the limited time we can carve out together and just enjoy "Couple Time" whenever and wherever we find it.

So, I'm getting ready for my own Date Night, like I do each Friday. Now, what are YOU going to do to celebrate Valentine's Day?

Make it a special occasion for the two of you, as a couple, that lasts not just this weekend, but throughout the whole year.

You won't be sorry.

I wrote this post while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of K-Y Brand and received samples of the Yours + Mine and Intense products. In addition, Mom Central sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Kohl's Cares for Kids--and you--With Dr. Seuss and a Giveaway!

What does $5 get you these days? At Kohl’s, it gets a classic children’s book, a huggable Dr. Suess friend, a New York Times best-seller on how to live a greener life, and that great feeling you get when giving back!

The Kohl’s Care for Kids® program, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is a charitable program that features $5 merchandise with 100 percent of net profit benefiting children’s health and education initiatives nationwide. This spring, the Kohl’s Cares for Kids program is featuring four Dr. Suess books and coordinating plush toys for just $5 each:

· The Lorax - Lorax plush
· The Foot Book – Orange “Foot” Character plush
· Oh, the Thinks You Can Think! – Yellow “Thinks” Character plush
· If I Ran the Circus – Whale plush

As the number one green retailer, according to Newsweek’s 2009 ranking, Kohl’s is pleased to offer The Lorax at such an incredible value to help kids learn the importance of caring for the environment. Also, all four Dr. Seuss books that are offered as part of the Kohl’s Cares for Kids® program are printed on 60 percent post-consumer recycled paper. For adults, that message is found in The Green Book. This book is a handbook on how to take steps to be more environmentally responsible.

This spring, get reading, go green and give back to your local community – all for just $5 at Kohl’s. Items can be purchased at more than 1,000 Kohl’s stores nationwide and at

Viv's Take: I had a chance to review the plush animals and book set--all four Dr. Seuss books and the matching plush creatures, plus The Green Book--and I was really impressed! First of all, the Dr. Seuss books are classics, as we all know. Kids love the rhyming and alliteration and will beg you to read them again and again.

The plush Dr. Seuss figures are not only cute as can be, but really generously sized. I would expect to pay two or three times as much than the $5 price, without the book, just for one of these cuddly guys, and to get both at such a low price is a great deal.
Here's a pic of them sitting on my bed. Last night, I propped the books up in front of them and had them sitting with their arms around each other (well, except for the whale), "reading", when the Engineer came in to bed.

The Green Book has lots of simple, everyday solutions for making your own life "greener", with names like Ellen Degeneres and Robert Redford offering their tips. Lots of star power in this little green volume, folks.

But here's the best part:

FIVE OF YOU will win a Dr. Seuss set in this Cool Moms Rule Giveaway!

To enter, leave a comment below with your favorite Dr. Seuss book or character (required for initial entry).

Additional (optional) entry methods:

Contest ends Friday, February 19th. Good luck!

As I mentioned in my post, I received a free set of the Dr. Seuss plush and books to aid in this review. I'm giving them to the local shelter. The winners of the giveaway will have the prizes sent directly to them from the providers of this giveaway.

And, While You're Expecting...

Amon Maternity wear helps you look your best while you're expecting. Their supportive foundations hold your belly up, providing support for your back and helping you keep correct posture. They're also great for AFTER the baby, to hold that tummy in until you get those post-pregnancy muscles back in shape.

Amon has belly bands, to provide lower back support and create a smooth look under clothing, ultra-soft briefs for comfortable, full coverage, "skivvies" with low legs to smoothe and support under clothes, and bodyshapers.

I actually tried out a pair of Amon bodyshaper undergarments (!) even though of course I'm not pregnant. The bodyshaper is actually for women to wear post-pregnancy, as it is designed to help you regain that pre-pregnancy figure while making you look great in the meantime. They're high-waisted, naturally, to smoothe your tummy, with firm support to hold you in (Available in black, white and nude, $25). Thumbs-up!

I do think you need to be careful when wearing a form-fitting dress because the Amon bodyshaper will create a delination at the top of the bodyshaper if you have a little extra poof around your waist. I think the Amon bodyshaper would be best under pants and a blouse or with a supportive camisole if worn under a dress.

Want to try out Amon maternity wear? One lucky commenter on this post will win a $50 gift certificate! Contest ends February 8th, so enter now!

To enter, just leave a comment below letting me know which Amon product you want to try and why.

I received a complimentary Amon bodyshaper to facilitate this review, and gave my honest opinion of it. The giftcard for the winner of this contest will be sent directly to her from the provider.

Just got this info on a contest for expectant Moms (and Dads!) and wanted to share it with you all. ~Viv
